LUNA: Congrats on your new single “die with my friends”! Can you talk us through the inspiration for the track?

LOMIS: Thank you so much! I wrote it when all of my friends were about to leave for college last summer. I was feeling the nostalgia before they even left. I didn’t know who I’d stay close with through the distance, but my hopes were high. The song as a whole is about wanting to be with your friends forever. It’s about the reality of going through your entire lives mostly separate, and the naive idea that we could all come back together for the very end of them.

LUNA: The song discusses wanting to spend your life with the friends you made in high school – do you have friends you see yourself remaining close with for the rest of your life?

LOMIS: I definitely do. I feel so lucky to have a solid handful of friends that I could see being in my life for a really long time!

LUNA: What does friendship and platonic love mean to you personally?

LOMIS: Friendship to me is having someone you can completely open up to, someone you can trust, and most importantly for me, someone who gets your humor and supplies endless laughter. It’s not necessarily about talking to each other every second of the day, but knowing that if you don’t talk for a bit, things will go right back to where they were when you do. Platonic love to me is the most important kinda love!

LUNA: Can you share some of your favorite memories of your friends from high school?

LOMIS: Where do I even begin? Well for my first two years of high school I went to a public arts school in Nashville. I met so many unique and talented kids there. Some of my favorite memories are sitting out in the hall during guitar class and writing every single day with my close friends. The best way to get to know someone is to write with them (laughs)! I then switched to online school for my last two years of high school to focus on music. I remember coming back to my old arts school to see my friends perform in a show and after, we climbed up to the roof of the school, stargazed and looked at the moon, and then went to get Waffle House. That was the day before the schools closed for covid, so that was a pretty special memory of normalcy!

LUNA: This is the first release since you shared your debut EP, In The Madness. How would you compare the creative process behind those tracks to this one now, years later?

LOMIS: I would say the creative process behind the new tracks was years in the making. I experimented with so many different ways to write and create a song over the past few years and this project was the first time I really figured out the way I work best. First off, I started all these songs on my acoustic guitar, the way I’ve always written a song. I wanted all of them to feel one-thousand percent me before reaching the production stage. I then brought them to my producer Brandon Shoop, who taught me so much and allowed me the space to experiment and try out anything I wanted. I co-produced every song on the EP except one. That feels so good to say! I played most of the guitar and bass on the project. I feel much more involved and connected to these songs than I ever have before.

LUNA: How does the physical space you inhabit influence your creativity?

LOMIS: To me comfort is key. Creativity at its core is just expression. There’s so much vulnerability in crafting a song, you have to feel physically comfortable in order to be mentally comfortable. I love studios that feel more home-y, rather than stuffy or fancy.

LUNA: You’ve recently been touring with JoJo! How has that been for you?

LOMIS: It has been so so so amazing! I’m currently on a flight to London to tour in the UK with her for the next couple of weeks. I feel endlessly lucky she’s taking me with her. Touring with JoJo has been such an incredible experience. Her whole team, crew, and fan base have been so kind and welcoming to me. It still doesn’t feel real!

LUNA: What initially sparked your interest in music? How did that transform into pursuing it as a career?

LOMIS: Well I grew up in Nashville, so I was constantly surrounded by incredible music and live shows. I initially fell in love with music through concerts. Seeing artists in their element on stage was what I gravitated towards most. I’ve been singing since I could speak, so I’ve always loved music, but it wasn’t until I was about 10 that I started taking it really seriously. Then once I picked up a guitar and started writing, I knew this not only could be a career for me, but it had to be. I knew I was going to do this and only this!

LUNA: How would you describe the vibe of your music to someone who’s never heard it before?

LOMIS: It’s always hard summing up your own music (laughs)! The way I’ve been describing it recently is soulful vocals, jazzy melodies, pop hooks and structure, with indie production. A mixture of a lot of things that I love!
