Now Listening: This Week's Tracks

Beck Pete - “April Fool’s In February”

With mascara smeared on her eyes and high heels in hand, Beck Pete is the embodiment of heartbreak. But as the pop artist sprawls across the floor, flings her heels over the room and wallows in dejection, it’s clear that the music video for her latest single, “April Fool’s in February,” is exactly that — a joke. Pete soundtracks the end of a turbulent relationship but allows herself to laugh and look ahead. The upbeat alt-pop track holds this duality with Pete’s gritty vocals and a melodic chorus. Part One of Pete’s forthcoming EP is out now, with more music on the way.

Pink Films - “M.A.D. (Movie’s Almost Done)”

Producer and guitarist Adam Hailstone has undeniable artistic talent, but until recently, he’s kept his music under wraps. But Hailstone is now releasing his art under the moniker Pink Films, with his latest single “M.A.D. (Movie’s Almost Done)” adding to a strong collection of introductory singles. Buttery vocals are layered over dreamy synths and guitar lines. But new sounds and switch-ups are equally as impressive and engaging, and showcase those strong production skills. With influences like Bon Iver and the Maccabees, and a history of playing sold-out performances with bands in London, we’re excited to watch Hailstone grow as a solo artist.

Express Office Portico - “Cosmic Joke”

The members of Express Office Portico met through adverts posted online for musicians during the pandemic. The five-piece solidified by the end of 2020, and now the group is moving along and gaining a strong following with the project. Consistent features on BBC Introducing and a recent run of live shows are only the start. The band just released their latest single “Cosmic Joke,” a dreamy synth song with indie and pop influences. But there’s also an interesting rock edge, thanks to the grit-tinged vocals from singer Tara Freeman. With more singles on the way, Express Office Portico is the band to watch

Good Rzn - “Hold On, The World Is Spinning”

LA-based alternative pop duo Good Rzn released “Hold On, The World Is Spinning,” their third ever single and a strong showcase of their uniquely mellow sound. Vocalist Josie Molasky and producer Tommy Ghirardini, the group’s members, successfully meld pop, rock and electronic music, influenced by artists and bands including Glass Animals, K. Flay and Two Feet among others. This single is especially important to the group, since it “talks about our [their] lives in a more personal way than anything other song [they’ve] released.” Through thoughtful lyrics and a well-crafted and balanced instrumental, this DIY pop tune is easy to get behind for fans of chilled out alternative pop.

Kios - “My Everything”

Nashville-based Indie Rock duo Kios released their new single “My Everything”: a summery love song as vibrant as its cover art. The single marks the band’s second this year, coming after their previous release in late March 2022, “What You Want.” “My Everything” has catchy melodies interweaving all throughout in the synth, electric guitar and vocal lines, creating a well-rounded, easy and enjoyable listen. If bands like Peach Pit and Boy Pablo find themselves in your heavy rotation, Kios might have exactly what your summer playlists need.

Flora MMA x Drive Safe I Love You x Leo Dolan - “19”

Their varied musical experiences culminate in a single that draws inspiration from the nostalgic indie rock ballads of the 90s and the genre-bending lo-fi, alternative elements of the 2020s. Lucky for listeners, the brand new duo is wasting no time, dropping their follow-up single, “Your Affection” later this month.

“Perfect is boring so why do I want it so bad?” is the start of this transparent track by Eleri Ward. This track, as she states are drenched in “Lush vocal arrangements over a continuous chord progression that finds all sorts of different colors and levels, "Perfect" explores the frustration of self-limitations deriving from the uncontrollable urge to strive for perfection. She always hears music in her head and drinks water. And lastly,  you will probably never catch her running.
