Preview: Outside Lands 2022
San Francisco’s best music festival returns to its summer dates this year at Golden Gate Park for a weekend of incredible music, tasty food and some good bud as well. This year’s diverse lineup boasts headliners SZA, Post Malone and Green Day as the legacy act. Fans across a variety of genres including EDM, Indie, Pop and Rock will all find a slew of artists they’ll be dying to catch each day. Before we dive into our music picks for the weekend, let’s cover the all the grounds for you to have a successful Outside Lands weekend.
First ensure your bag and what you plan to bring is in compliance with the festival’s guidelines so you face no surprised upon arrival. Rideshare can be a bit of a mess, so consider taking the shuttle from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, the BART or be prepared to walk a few blocks at the end of the evening. It’s worth noting you can schedule rides to and from the event in the Lyft app up to an hour before you need your ride, so plan in advance if you do plan to Lyft.
Don’t let the daytime sun fool you - this is San Francisco we’re talking about and it WILL get cold by the evening. Make sure you bring a jacket (or two!) and consider getting a locker to store a change of clothes for when that fog rolls in.
While music remains the core of the festival, make sure to check out all the amazing additional activations the festival has to offer. Get food from some of the Bay’s best restaurants, try some beer, wine or cocktails from the festival’s vendors and make time for a set or two at the SOMA tent or The House by Heineken. For those 21+ and interested in finding new marijuana brands to try, stop by Grass Lands for a celebration of all things cannabis, with education and resources about how it integrates into our daily lives.
Now that you’ve got all your bases covered, read below for our day by day music guide to 2022’s Outside Lands.
Friday
Start your weekend off right with one of our Issue 18 stars THE BLSSM at 12pm at the Panhandle stage. Head over to our Issue 11 cover stars Inner Wave at the Sutro stage or PawPaw Rod at Panhandle for some indie videos or make your way to Lands End to get serenaded by ODIE. After, get your energy and heart rate up by jumping along to Brooklyn’s Del Water Gap at Twin Peaks before making the tough call between songstress Faye Webster at Sutro at 2:40 pm or the groovy Duckwrth at Lands End at 2:50 pm. ROLE MODEL fans will be sure to arrive early for his 4 pm set at Sutro, so plan accordingly if you want to get a good look at the heartthrob.
As the late afternoon comes around make sure to do a check-in with yourself and make time for food and water. 5:20 brings the tough decision between the feel good Dayglow at Twin Peaks, chillwave God Washed Out at Sutro or the eclectic Oliver Tree at Lands End, so split your time wisely or commit to your favorite. Afterwards head over to Twin Peaks to get into the groove and mood with The Marías and prepare for the evening ahead.
Friday closes the night with Disclosure at Sutro for those looking to dance, Phoebe Bridgers at Twin Peaks for all the sad kings and queens of there and of course SZA at Lands End for those trying to sing their heart out.
Saturday
Keep the energy high on Saturday by starting your day off with our Issue 15 stars MICHELLE at Twin Peaks at 12:50 before heading over to Benny Sings at Sutro to get charmed and fall in love. Take some time in the afternoon to explore some of the festival's activations and maybe even stop by Grasslands for some…shopping. Get back into the music with Los Angeles rockers Local Natives at 4 pm at Lands End and get ready for the evening ahead by stopping by one of the 90 food vendors for dinner and swing by Wine Lands or Beer Lands for a refreshing beverage as well. Hip Hop fans can then head to Jack Harlow at Lands End, our pop fiends can head to queen Rina Sawayama at Twin Peaks and indie heads can make their way to the Sutro stage for Australian electropop band Parcels.
Saturday evening keeps the vibes high with legacy act Green Day taking Lands End, the iconic Kali Uchis taking Twin Peaks and french electronic duo Polo & Pan taking Sutro.
Sunday
Despite Sunday being the final day of Outside Lands doesn’t mean the day will be any less packed than the others. Kick things off with our Issue 14 star Unusual Demont at Pandhandle and stick around to catch our fav Jelani Aryeh afterwards. Explore any part of the festival you haven’t gotten to check out GastroMagic Culinary Stage before grooving to British indie rock Wet Leg at Sutro.
The late afternoon brings the ever so lovely Dominic Fike at Lands End and rockers The Backseat Lovers at Sutro, so we recommend splitting your time between the two to get the best of both worlds. Afterwards you’ll be faced with the difficult overlapping of the iconic Weezer at Lands End, popstar Kim Petras Twin Peaks and indie legends Mt. Joy at Sutro - so plan in advance and be open to hoping around.
Sunday closes the weekend with Post Malone at Lands End for the Posty fans, Illenium at Twin Peaks for the EDM and Mitski at Sutro for those looking for a cathartic release.
