Reimagining the Experience of Live Music With Sofar Sounds in Downtown San Diego

EXPANDED ACROSS HUNDREDS OF CITIES ACROSS THE GLOBE — Sofar Sounds is reimagining the way we experience live music. 

With carefully curated performances, this music community prioritizes the magic of audience and artist connection, exemplified perfectly last Thursday night in downtown San Diego, as three diverse acts shared the stage for a night of meaningful performances and sound discovery.

The selected venue for the night was the second floor of Gaslamp Tavern, a sports bar transformed into a quiet and intimate oasis from the busy downtown streets. Cozy blankets were spread across the floor for guests to sit together. Sofar Sounds’ signature letter sign glowed brightly in the dim setting, attracting attention to the stage. 

One of Sofar’s goals is to bring together a palette of acts from various genres to enhance the immersive music experience. Among the night’s performers were passionate, up-and-coming artists RoSaWay, Ph33Lipe, and January Muse. 

Pop-jazz-electro band RoSaWay was the first to perform, energizing the audience right off the bat with their vocal, flute, drums, and machines combos. Hailing all the way from Paris, the duo blended groovy sounds from the past and present. 

After a short break with a community-building icebreaker, emerging hip-hop recording artist Ph33Lipe brought his powerful, emotion-driven verses to center stage. The stripped-down style of the performances welcomed lively audience participation as the group sang the lyrics and spoke with artists directly during song breaks. 

Last to perform was violinist and vocalist January Muse, accompanied by his brother on keys. The artist shared that he leads somewhat of a double life, additionally working on the corporate side of Sofar Sounds as a talent booker. 

Following his performance, January Muse, also known as Cam Parsons, spoke briefly with Luna about his artistry and work. He shared that he’s excited about the intimacy Sofar Sounds cultivates because it allows people to create community. “If I can connect with one person going through the same stuff, that’s meaningful.”

When asked about his perspective on the future of Sofar, he said he hopes to continue giving small artists a platform to connect with audiences all over.
