Review: Olive Klug in San Diego on Tour With Daisy the Great
ON A BUZZING SATURDAY EVENING — in downtown San Diego, The House of Blues’ Voodoo Room was the halfway stop on indie pop band Daisy the Great’s All You Need Is Time Tour. But before the headliners took the stage, contemporary folk singer Olive Klug brought spellbinding energy to the room with their resonating lyrics and honey-like vocals.
Whether they’re singing about missing the Portland rain or not feeling the right age, Klug manages to create music that makes you feel a little less alone. There is an underlying sense of community support in all their songs, which is expressed even more evidently through their bubbly yet humble stage presence.
The influence of folk icons such as Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile were evident in Klug’s artistry the moment they began their set with just a guitar in hand.
“So apparently your brain is supposed to be fully developed at 25,” they joked with the crowd to introduce their catchy, newer release “Coming of Age.” With amusing lyrics such as “I’m a toddler running through the bank” and “I don’t think I’ll grow out of my existential angst,” the song dives into the struggle of still feeling like a teenager while balancing adult responsibilities — an all-too-familiar feeling amongst many twenty-somethings.
The magnitude of Klug’s ability to captivate the attention of an entire crowd as an opening solo act was impressive to say the least. They had the crowd animatedly singing along to the purposely chaotic chorus of “Out of Line,” a single that celebrates not fitting in.
They reached the end of their performance with a serene, piano-led track that went viral on TikTok, “Raining in June.”
Klug has a rare and inviting honesty to them that makes you feel like you’ve known them forever. The entire set felt like watching and cheering on a friend — Klug is incredibly talented, and you want them to have the world.
You can dive into Klug’s musical world on all streaming platforms and catch them on the remainder of Daisy the Great’s national tour this summer.
