Review and Gallery: Alex Lahey Brings Vulnerability and Comfort to Seattle
βWEDNESDAY ISNβT JUST A WEEKDAYβ β I thought as I found myself forgetting all my worries and blissfully dancing on a Wednesday night at the Alex Lahey show in Seattle. Similar to that feeling of driving on the highway on a summer night with the windows down, everything felt dreamy and cloudless, all while making a memorable and lively night to look back on.
Lahey and her band made their appearance on stage with a light-hearted and silly country-like intro song, giving the crowd a smile. This created a sense of a casualness that let the crowd feel comfortable, making the environment easygoing. Itβs as if we were all familiar friends who were just getting together to enjoy ourselves with the presence of each other.
Playing songs from her newest album, The Answer is Always Yes, I was in awe of the dynamics and expressiveness of each song. Alex kept the crowd filled with high energy and smiles while also creating an intimate setting in which we were able to feel the emotions she built into these new songs. Lucky for us, we also got to hear a few of her past tracks and some personal favorites, including βEvery Dayβs The Weekendβ and βWes Anderson.β Both had me falling into the feeling of nostalgia from a fond 2018 summer filled with a sunny feel-good playlist.
Halfway through the set, the crowd found themselves in anticipation and curiosity when Lahey took a moment of pause in between songs. She went on to mention how she βhasnβt done this on stage before,β then called out someoneβs name to make sure they were in the crowd. The fan responded with excitement and some confusion, until Lahey asked them if they would go to prom with the personβs significant other, who was standing right beside them in the crowd. Everyone cheered and clapped as they said yes and the two hugged, further cementing a warm and delightful emotion amongst the venue.
Seeing all this happen felt like watching a heart-felt moment from one of those silly but cute romance movies, a Scott Pilgrim vs. the World moment in real time. It was almost as if I could see all the comic book effects drawing stars and floating hearts.
Iβm very happy that Laheyβs show will be part of my early summer memories. The night gifted me a little escape from my worries, reminding me that every day can feel like the weekend β itβs just up to me to write the script.
