Q&A: Whose Rules "We Might Ova" + Debut EP

IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG BEFORE “WE MIGHT OVA” GETS YOU GROOVING - thanks to emphatic synths and catchy vocals, Whose Rules takes you into a lush soundscape. The Norweigan producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist is creating groovy tracks that will become a staple to your playlists. Previously recording under the name Marius, the artist continues to grow and evolve with his sound and explore an array of production elements. His latest single “We Might Ova” showcases the best of some soft auto tune vocals and sweet instrumentals to create an endearing slow jam.

Whose Rules’ debut EP will be out September 18th, with so much more to come. Whose Rules will quickly find his spot in the budding Indie and Bedroom Pop scene and is sure to be a strong character. LUNA: Congrats on your new single "We Might Ova”! It’s got a really fun vibe and flow - can you share a bit about the creative process behind the track?

WR: Thanks! I played the PS4 game «Dreams» a lot while making “we might ova”. It's a game where you can make games and play other people’s creations. I got a creative boost from it. I put a lot of time into the chord progression to get the voicings right. I wrote the vocal melody improvising and lyrics also improvised. Tried some new guitar tones as well on this one.

LUNA: How have you seen your creative process evolve since you first started making music?

WR: Naturally in the beginning it's a lot about finding out how things work. I find myself working a lot faster than before. Now that I know how everything in Logic works. I’m also playing more instruments than ever. Trying to get better on keys and drums.

LUNA: You’ve got an EP coming out in September and it showcases some killer production elements! What are some of the key sonic elements shaping the tracks?

WR: A lot of wavy guitars, heavy drums and random brief noises. And of course the high pitched child-like vocal. My main instrument is guitar, so that’s a key sonic element I think.

LUNA: Outside of musical influences like Gus Dapperton and Thundercat, what played a role in the overall feel of the project?  

WR: Good question. Maybe the environment that I'm working in. I made a studio out of an old cabin in the middle of the woods. It's quiet and low key. And to clear my mind I can just step outside and walk amongst deer and moose.

LUNA: What’s been inspiring you lately?  

WR: For the most part its just music. I’ve been listening to knowledge a lot lately. Love how he treats samples and drums. It's insane.

LUNA: On the writing end, are there any common themes or narratives you’re drawn to lately?

WR: I’m pretty new at writing songs/lyrics. So it’s easy for me to start out writing basic love songs. But i’m stoked on trying to write more and more complex stuff in the future.

LUNA: What do you want people to know about you as an artist?

WR: I want people to know that am still having a lot of fun making music, and hope that comes across.

LUNA: From what I understand Norway’s experience with COVID-19 has been less intense than other places like the US - how are you doing lately? How are you taking care of yourself these days?

WR: I've been doing good, thank you. Yea, its a lot less intense here in Norway. I’m pretty used to sit by my self working on music. And I'm living in a very remote place away from people anyway. Most of the time goes to playing instruments or making tunes. Also playing some God of War and Dark Souls.

LUNA: So much is up in the air so take this how you like, but what’s next for you?

WR: I'm excited to get the project out in September and continue working on the next one.
