SONICALLY MASTERING THEIR TRADEMARK DRUM AND BASS - The Brummies’ upcoming album vows to connect with, and draw upon the nostalgia, emotion, and the passion of both their listeners and of their newfound fans alike. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, The Brummies’ latest releases “After Midnight” and “Sunshine” are characteristic of their vitalizing and ever-changing visions and style as musicians. Needless to say, their upcoming album possesses much more than simply a feeling of hope, but rather evokes a much needed promise that despite the hard times we currently face, positivity lies ahead and likewise, within the melodic space carefully crafted and carried between the captivating guitar riffs embellished within their music.

Read below to learn more about The Brummies’ upcoming projects, their adaptation to creating and producing in quarantine, and the concept behind their new album.

LUNA: How has quarantine been treating you? Has it impacted your creative process much? 

JACOB: Quarantine has been rough for us because we want to be on the road and playing our new music for fans in person and in venues that we love.  With that being said, we have found a way to use this time to grow and be even more creative than before with tools like Zoom and FaceTime. We can all be in separate studios and sending each other files in real time to create songs/sounds/vibes that before we couldn’t do as easily or as quickly. Nothing will ever be better than all being in a room together, writing a song, and playing off of each other, but we’ve learned that we can still create art during this time of quarantine.

LUNA: What role do you think growing up in Nashville has played in shaping your sound? 

JACOB: We actually didn’t grow up in Nashville. We are all from Birmingham, Alabama. We moved here around 10 years ago and love it. Just being around all of these super talented and creative people makes you want to be better in so many ways. This city has a way of keeping you humble because of the amazing creatives that live here. Everywhere you turn there is someone way more talented than you. We are lucky enough to be friends with some of our favorite artists and that is definitely reflected in the music that we make. We are constantly inspired here in Nashville and are thankful to be in a city that loves and fosters creative energy the way it does.  

LUNA: It’s been two years since your debut project Eternal Reach was released, how do you think your music/the visions for your music have evolved since then?

JOHN: It’s hard to say what has changed since it’s a constant evolution. It’s like growing older. You don’t see the change like some distant family members would when they only see you at Christmas and say “My how you’ve grown.” Our music changes every time we hear new music that is inspiring to us. We take a bit of what we like and I think subconsciously apply it to what we create. In comparing the new album to Eternal Reach, I’d say that we leaned a little more into the sonics and production, and really focused on the groove. We are currently working on new music and I can already tell that it’s another departure from our upcoming album. That evolution keeps us excited.

LUNA: Congrats on your latest single “After Midnight”! The song has such a fun flow to it. Can you share a bit about the making of this track? 

JOHN:  We were just messing around one night where we practice, and started this jam on an old Roland keyboard. It’s the foundation of the whole song . We experimented with a lot of sounds in the studio from using a real bass to going back to a synth bass. We just knew that the groove felt good. We originally had a bridge section in this song that turned into a half-time break down…something really moody. We loved the part but just didn’t think it kept you in the song once we departed from the main groove. So we abandoned that part. That section may not be completely lost though. This will become apparent to whoever gets the album on vinyl. The other focus we had in this song were the melodies we chose. Once the main melody got locked down, we felt that the chorus needed a counter melody. So we chose a harmony that moves in an atypical way that got us excited. With these being the key elements of the song, apart from the synths, we eventually worked through the song until we felt it was complete. 

LUNA: In addition to “After Midnight”, your previous two singles released this year also have a feel-good energy. What’s been inspiring this energy despite all that’s going on in the world? 

JOHN: These songs were actually written before all this rapid change began. Some of the change is terrible and some of it is wonderful, overdue, and necessary. In any case, I’m happy that these songs are feel good because we really need some positivity in times like these. If our songs can make somebody smile and dance then I think that’s a win.  

LUNA: Previously you’ve been able to collaborate with the lovely Kacey Musgraves. Are there any plans for future collaborations with other artists? 

TREVOR: Without spoiling too much, we may or may not be releasing some remixes/covers of some of the songs off of the new album. Stay tuned.

LUNA: What do you hope your listeners take away from your upcoming music?

TREVOR: We hope they can just relate to it in any way possible. Whether it makes them want to dance, cry, or even give them a little Deja Vu. Any connection for listeners is extremely important to us when we make and release music.

LUNA: What do you hope the rest of 2020 will bring y’all? 

TREVOR: We hope the rest of 2020 brings us some new fans and listeners that have never heard of us before that can hop on board The Brummies train!
