Q&A: It’s Summer All Year Long as Sun Room Discusses Their Latest EP ‘Outta Their Minds,’ Headline Tour & “Unpolished Sound”
LIFE’S LIKE AN ETERNAL SUMMER — For Southern California rock band Sun Room, summer isn’t just a state of mind — it’s a way of life. In their latest EP, Outta Their Minds, Sun Room makes waves in the world of surf-rock, introducing four new songs and their own nine-run headline tour across the US.
Composed of Luke Asgian (lead vocals & guitar), Ashton Minnich (guitar), Max Pinamonti (bass), and Gibby Anderson (drums), Sun Room has transitioned from playing local house and garage band shows to touring with Louis Tomlinson and supporting Inhaler in an 18-run tour.
While the band’s previous year has been filled with first-times, new opportunities, and changes, they have maintained their SoCal roots and retained their ’60s inspiration.
Luna had the opportunity to sit down with the band to hear more about their 2023 North American tour, as they perform in support of big-name artists, as well as their thoughts on the music industry as a whole. Read the interview down below.
LUNA: “Cadillac” was the first out of two singles to be released before the EP. Why did you choose “Cadillac” to set the precedent for Outta Their Minds?
ASGIAN: This EP was a return to our roots in loud, fast garage rock, and “Cadillac” happened to be the loudest and fastest of the project. It also just felt the most different from all the other music that’s coming out of the music industry right now. A lot of music nowadays is quite polished, and “Cadillac” sure isn’t.
LUNA: Both “Cadillac” and “Kaden’s Van” bring an aroma of summertime, chill vibes, and the SoCal lifestyle. How does the rest of the EP reflect these feelings?
ASGIAN: I think a lot of the songs we release are based around our friends and experiences down here in San Diego, and we made the EP during a summer at home so it was bound to reflect the chaos and fun that comes with that.
LUNA: How does Outta Their Minds differ from your previous EPs, Sol Del Sur and Somewhere Tropical?
ASGIAN: Our live performances have always been a bit more unhinged than our recorded music, and for this EP we wanted to capture the chaos and energy of the shows we play. It’s louder and it’s faster than anything we’ve put out so far, and at the end of the day that usually means it’s more fun to play.
LUNA: Last year you played over 115 shows while headlining festivals and supporting major artists such as Louis Tomlinson and Inhaler. How has playing alongside big-name artists prepared you for your upcoming tour?
ASGIAN: We kinda got thrown straight into the deep end last year with shows (laughs). I remember our first show with Louis Tomlinson last year was, like, 15 times bigger than any show we had played before that. It was one of those things where there was no way to adequately prepare for what was about to happen — we just had to go for it. When it came to the road, we definitely learned things the hard way many times — and even slept on the street in Vienna one night — but I’m so glad it all happened. I think it prepared us for just about anything.
LUNA: What was your favorite memory from your 2022 tour run? Was there a notable difference between opening for an artist and performing in a music festival slot?
ASGIAN: One of my favorite memories of last year was playing the Away From Home festival in Malaga, Spain. It was one of those moments where we couldn’t even fathom the amount of people in the audience. And we were in beautiful coastal Spain — couldn't get any better than that.
LUNA: With a fresh EP and a nationwide tour to look forward to, what else can fans expect from Sun Room in the upcoming months?
ASGIAN: Already working on more music that we’re super stoked on — that should be out during summer. We’re also headlining a tour in the southeast area of the US this spring, so that should be super fun.
