Q&A: R.I.Pablo Brings You Some Kaleidoscope-pop with new single "Sunday Morning Boy"
SELF-PROCLAIMED “PSYCHEDELIC SAD BOI” - R.I.Pablo is effortlessly creating distinct music that personifies the stylish and musically intelligent individual he is. With the release of his second single, “Sunday Morning Boy”, he's demonstrating he’s not afraid to get off the beaten path and pave his own way. Although he's considered a fairly new artist, R.I.Pablo is no outsider to the pop industry. Behind the scenes, he's actually written and co-written many artists' hit songs. Having worked with artists such as Bebe Rexha, Anne Marie, Louis Tomlinson among many others as well as being a part of a writing collective based in Manchester, UK called The Six. While being familiar with songwriting and producing music for other artists, this is the first time he’s doing it for himself.
With the release of his brand new single, “Sunday Morning Boy”, R.I.Pablo is exploring the emotions involving unrequited love. It's a universal experience that any listener can relate to, however this feeling he's talking about arises when you want more than a physical relationship with that specific person. The desire for a deep connection emerges once that chance is granted, but it's one-sided and that's when you realize they won't be there when you wake up in the morning. Using his honest lyricism and raw vocals, he's able to pull you into this song and feel all the fresh feelings this track brings forth. He also does this by creating a super catchy melody and bubb that you can't seem to get out of your head and instantly learn and are unconsciously singing along within the second listen. Without a doubt, R.I.Pablo is a breakout solo artist that is finally getting the recognition he deserves after contributing to so many artists' musical creations. LUNA: Thank you so much for your time, to start off just wanted to see how you were doing? How’s it been slowly integrating back to normal?
R.I.PABLO: I'm not sure I'm completely ready for “back to normal”, my project was birthed in lockdown and came from a place of escapism. I think I only got there because I gave myself time to fully explore my creativity. As much as i’m excited to meet new people, go to raves, festivals, travel the world etc i would like a few more months of hibernation in my rabbit hole thank you.
LUNA: Now to the music! Tell us about your brand new single, “Sunday Morning Boy”, what inspired you to write this song?
R.I.PABLO:Unrequited love after a hookup.
LUNA: With “Sunday Morning Boy”, what came first, the idea/lyrics or the music?
R.I.PABLO: The chorus lyric and melody came out at the same time. I didn’t really think about it, it just happened. I feel like the phrase “I wanna be your Sunday morning boy” should have been said a long time ago, it just makes sense.
LUNA: Similar to your previous single “Bloom” you use a lot of unconventional sounds and blend them effortlessly together, how important is it for you to stand out and bring forward new material?
R.I.PABLO: Thank you! It's so important to me! My biggest fear is for my music to be forgotten. Even if it stands out because it's shit, at least it stands out. I always imagine a spotify dump truck, dumping thousands of songs into a spotify landfill every day, and if you look closely there's a few bits of gold in there. I’m trying to be that gold!
LUNA: What other forms of art do you look to draw inspiration from when creating music?
R.I.PABLO: You could argue it's not art, but Nature. Going for a walk, looking at trees, walking round gardens etc. I feel like all art derives from nature in some way or another, so I might as well get it straight from the source.
LUNA: When you hit a roadblock in writing or creating your songs, what's something that gets you out of that rut?
R.I.PABLO: Mundane tasks/chores definitely help. It's amazing how your creative problems solve themselves when you hoover your house.
LUNA: Is there any difference in your musical process when you're creating tunes for other artists or working with The Six, as opposed to for yourself?
R.I.PABLO:: I’d say the biggest difference is when I write for myself I completely let go of any rules and really set out to make something completely unique that only I could perform.
LUNA: Who has been the most memorable artist you have worked with?
R.I.PABLO: SO MANY! But working with Janelle Monae was so inspiring. She felt extraterrestrial. There was such a magical energy around her.
LUNA: Being that you're a part of the U.K. scene and also half Spainard, do you feel as though you have a responsibility to represent them both in your music?
R.I.PABLO: I don't see it as a responsibility but more like a secret sauce I always have in my back pocket.
LUNA: What are you most excited about in these upcoming months? Any new projects you’ve got lined up?
R.I.PABLO: I'm very excited to release “BUG LYF” (my first EP) in September. It’s been a long time coming but I am so proud of it.
