Q&A: Mei Jun is Embracing Transformation through "Wallpaper" and Upcoming EP

MEI JUN RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO “WALLPAPER” and it’s well worth the wait. As the summer breeze gets us in our feels, Mei June's introspective melodies reflects his renewed connection with Los Angeles and an introspective take on growing up.

"Wallpaper" captures the essence of transition, echoing the fading romanticism of youth against the backdrop of the pandemic's solitude. This theme threads through Mei Jun's upcoming EP, interweaving emotions and experiences into a larger, universally relatable narrative.

With a captivating visual companion on the horizon, Mei Jun's creative journey continues. As he navigates the uncharted waters of personal growth and artistic expression, his intentions for the coming months remain focused: embracing his city, fine-tuning the EP, and upholding trust in the artistic process. Read below to learn more about “Wallpaper”, the new project and more.

LUNA: It’s been too long since we’ve caught up - how has this summer season been treating you?!

MEI JUN: Summer has been great actually. It’s kinda weird, but after a couple years of feeling disillusioned with LA, I’ve found something and fell in love with the city again. Don’t see myself leaving for a long while.

LUNA: Congrats on the release of "Wallpaper”! Could you tell us about the inspiration behind the song and what personal experiences or emotions influenced its creation?

MEI JUN: It’s about growing up and watching the romanticism of youth kinda start to fade. Colors become less saturated, the dreamy filter starts to sharpen in focus, etc. It’s not an inherently good or bad feeling, it’s more just an objective thing of nature. I also made it early in the pandemic, so I definitely had a lot of time to reflect on this type of stuff haha.

LUNA: "Wallpaper" seems to blend a lot of different elements of your signature sound. How would you describe the evolution of your musical style with your upcoming work?

MEI JUN: The new stuff is just way more analog - it’s less options and infinitely more fun haha. Because of that - the live instruments and live recording - this project sounds more like rock than anything else. Though, on this project at least, you still hear a lot of pop sensibilities. Moving forward, you’ll hear me start to challenge that more.

LUNA: The song delves into themes of vulnerability and self-discovery. What set of lyrics from the track are you most proud of?

MEI JUN: I like the second verse a lot.

“I remember you screaming through the phone, it’s hard to find another place that you call home…no water so blue…it’s all so grayed out, you fade out.”

LUNA: Looking into the upcoming EP, what can we anticipate from the rest of the EP in terms of themes and musical exploration?

MEI JUN: There is a larger theme that ties this EP and the next one together, though it’s pretty personal. It’s personal, but it’s not about a person. Any person or situation I mention represents the theme. It’s all tucked away neatly in the lyrics, and I want it to be open to interpretation. I know what it means to me, but it doesn’t have to be the same for everyone else. In terms of sound, there’s definitely some range. Some dreamy, some intimate, some with weight, and some a bit delicate.

LUNA: Could you give us a sneak peek into what we can expect from the visual representation of the EP?

MEI JUN: There is a longer visual piece that ties this project and the next project together. Again, I don’t want to say too much, but it’s solely based on the larger theme that ties the two EPs together, and it’s by far the most ambitious thing I’ve ever done. I’m equal parts terrified and excited, but I honestly think that’s the best case scenario haha. I love it.

LUNA: What intentions do you have for the upcoming months?

MEI JUN: More falling in love with this city, wrapping up all moving parts for the next EP, and continuing the practice of trust hehe.
