Griff Clawson is sure to find a spot on your radar with “Haircut” as he continues to define his solo career. Read below to learn more about the making of “Haircut” and what’s next for Clawson.

LUNA: Congrats on the new track! The track tells the story of a trip to a barbershop and the emotions that came with it all. How did a seemingly mundane errand inspire such a heartfelt song?

GRIFF CLAWSON: We always hear sayings like “it’s the little things” and they always sound so cheesy until you realize your hair is way too long and in that moment you’re so heavily reminded of someone. My favorite songs of mine and songs in general always seem to have that effect of taking a small and seemingly irrelevant moment or thing and connecting it to a feeling or person.

LUNA: What set of lyrics from “Haircut” are you most proud of?

GRIFF CLAWSON: Hahaha honestly I think rhyming “hair short” with “airport” is hilarious and one of my favs in the song. But then in verse two the “are you an actress, were all those nights some kind of practice” feels like a knife in the heart every time I hear it.

LUNA: What’s the worst hair cut you’ve ever gotten? How did you make it work?

GRIFF CLAWSON: I remember being like 10 years old and getting a haircut so bad that I wouldn’t go out and play with my friends and I remember like scream crying about it feeling so powerless hahah, 10 year old me would be happy to know that my hair grew back and that I have a song called haircut

LUNA: How would you compare the tone of this track to upcoming music?

GRIFF CLAWSON: This track is the first of my favorite batch of music I’ve ever made. I've had the most honest, fun, and creative time working on all of these songs

LUNA: Are there any narratives or common themes you’ve been drawn to lately?

GRIFF CLAWSON: Yeah I’ve found a few common themes popping up in my songs lately, those being transitional phases in relationships, like beginnings or endings, time, and existential anecdotes. My goal is for all of those subjects to coexist seamlessly in my music as they do in my personality and life.

LUNA: Take us through your typical creative process for your solo work.

GRIFF CLAWSON: Honestly my process has changed so consistently over the past year that I wasn’t sure I even had one. But I’m starting to find that my favorite ideas and songs come from random thoughts in the shower or on a walk and I’ll write it down to voice memo it on my phone and flesh it out in my studio later on. The best and also funniest part of the whole thing is when you listen back to a voice memo from a week or two ago and it sounds like someone recorded you drunk talking in your sleep. But for every 10 of those there’s usually 1 good little nugget

LUNA: You’ve worked with some really talented artists like Ali Gatie and Loud Luxury - how has a history of collaborating with others shaped your solo project?

GRIFF CLAWSON: The best thing about working with other artists is that through creating so many different styles you learn exactly what’s unique to you and what your voice is. So, after a couple years of working mostly with other people I have a much stronger sense of who Griff Clawson is and what Griff Clawson sounds like.

LUNA: With “Haircut” now out, what can we expect from you in the coming months?

GRIFF CLAWSON: You can expect some corny dad jokes on my instagram stories, simp-y videos on my Tik Tok, and definitely more music.
