Gallery + Q&A: Indoor Pets

ENERGETIC & POWERFUL is the simplest way to describe Indoor Pets' stage presence. Coming all the way from London, the band played a spirited set filled with guitar solos and screams at Los Angeles' Moroccan Lounge. Lead singer Jamie Glass' intensity radiated throughout the crowd, making it impossible to not move around and jam out to their infectious music.
Indoor Pets will release their debut album "Be Content" on March 8th and could not be more excited to have more content out for their growing fanbase. Read on to hear the band's take on the album, their Dirty Pop label and more.
LUNA: The band started as a just for fun sort of project but over time became more serious. What was that initial transition like into realizing music was gonna be your full time career?
INDOOR PETS: Slightly terrifying. There’s been many points where we’ve all been offered promotions in our day jobs or the option to start a different career that we’ve turned down to be four smelly boys driving around the globe in a van. It’s about what’s going to make you look back on your life and say you did what made you happy. We may not be able to afford rent, but we’re so busy touring we don’t need houses anyway!
LUNA: What’s your elevator pitch as to what type of music you make? Do you think you fit into a genre?
IP:We’ve always described ourselves as Dirty Pop. Our songs are filled with pop hooks that get stuck in your head for weeks, surrounded by loud heavy guitars that rattle your eyeballs out of their sockets.
LUNA: Do you have a go-to set of artists that you draw inspiration from? Who have you been listening to lately?
IP: We have a massive range of influences from Blondie, Ramones, Talking Heads to PUP, Pixies and NIN. I’ve been listening and falling in love with The Beths lately. Such a great band! Also, Boy Azooga released one of the most sonically exciting debut albums I’d heard in years a few months back. Definitely check them out!
LUNA: You recently put out a re-recorded version of “Pro Procrastinator” - what ultimately lead to that decision?
IP: It was a song that we always intended to be on our debut album. It just took a little longer than we would have liked. It fits with the album’s theme of self-deprecation and celebrating imperfection wonderfully so it was a no-brainer for us. We decided to record a version during one of the album sessions to see how it compared to the original. Luckily in our humble opinion, it bangs harder than we could have ever possibly imagined.
LUNA: So the debut album coming out in March - exciting! Was there any common theme when writing for the album? What can we expect when comparing to the music you have out now?
IP: “Be Content” is basically a collection of songs that examine what it is that I hate about myself and the world around me and accepting that actually it’s okay to feel like that. I’m a little weird and feel like I really struggle to fit in, but why fight it? Finding a way to be happy in your own skin is the first step towards a better life and this album is like a sonic therapy session where I’m able to finally get a lot of weight off of my chest. It’s hard to say what to expect because there are a few unreleased songs that are our heaviest yet whilst also a few that have a pop shine that you wouldn’t expect from us either. Expect the unexpected I guess, to summarise in a cliche.
LUNA: Is there anything you want people to take away from your music?
IP: Just have fun. If you want to dance for a few minutes, we’re here for that. If you want to scream a chorus hook so loud that your lungs fall out, we’re here for that as well. If you want to think about how you’re also wasting your life, we’re especially here for that. Just have fun.
LUNA: What’s next for Indoor Pets?
IP: A good night’s sleep. Then perhaps world domination?
