Q&A: Ayoni Encourages Intentionality in Love and Art in Latest Single “You Said I Love You Too Soon”
DIVING HEAD-FIRST INTO A NEW SONIC ERA – Ayoni unveils the first glimpse of her upcoming EP with “You Said I Love You Too Soon”. Written back in 2019, the track looks at love through a more pessimistic lens, exploring what happens when we confess love too early.
Ayoni’s sultry vocals flirt with a lusciously sensual melody, immersing each listener in a mystical and smoky atmosphere. The intimate and moody track considers how far our generation will go to escape the clutches of loneliness. “You Said I Love You Too Soon” introduces a new sonic and thematic era for Ayoni as she dips into more intentional and ambitious productions. Her upcoming EP Vision invites listeners to contemplate what it takes to see a vision through to completion.
Inspired by artists such as Lorde and Adele, the Barbadian-born artist explores both personal experiences and worldwide events in her music, using her art as a channel for self-discovery. “You Said I Love You Too Soon” follows Ayoni’s 2019 project Iridescent, a snapshot of her own voyage through adolescence and the challenges she faced growing up as a woman.

LUNA: Congrats on “You Said I Love You Too Soon”! What does this track mean to you personally?
AYONI: This track means a lot to me as the first release this year and a more cinematic approach to my sound.
LUNA: Where does the inspiration for the track come from?
AYONI: I wrote this song three years ago at a time where I was exploring the way that loneliness can influence the decisions we make romantically and the speed at which we may jump into intense relationships with people that we barely know. I’ve experienced anxieties about being alone in adulthood – further exacerbated by the pandemic and the feeling of distance between me and love. In a culture that places enormous societal expectations on love, “You Said I Love You Too Soon” considers the difference between love and infatuation and the impact of professing love too soon.
LUNA: As the first taste of your upcoming EP, how does the track compare to the rest of the EP?
AYONI: This track is one of the most straightforward songs. I’m a lover of double entendres and ambitious, whimsical production but this single can be taken most literally.
LUNA: You created the track in 2019, how has your relationship with “You Said I Love You Too Soon” and the themes it focuses on evolved since then?
AYONI: You know, it’s been very interesting evolving with this track. When I first wrote it I was in a dark place and I think my general skepticism bled through into the writing. I don’t know that this generation moves any quicker than past generations in love. If anything I see more women knowing their worth and being more uncompromising in their standards.
That being said, I think for me the song has reaffirmed the importance of being intentional in love and trusting divine timing above all.
LUNA: What themes are you most drawn to in your music?
AYONI: Change and evolution. I think freedom to be multifaceted has always spoken to me.
LUNA: How did you first get into making music?
AYONI: I’ve written songs since my early teens but I fell into production with Melodrama and CTRL. Then it was the only thing I really wanted to do. For me being fully involved in every sound and moment of my songs is super important to me.
LUNA: Have you discovered anything about yourself when creating your music?
AYONI: I’ve discovered how much stamina I have when I’m in love with my art. I love getting immersed in the creative process and the transformations that always brings about. I’m also realising I’m in a maximalist era. I’m super into layers and sub grooves and overall organized chaos and that is a new realization at this point in my creative journey.
LUNA: Which element of your physical space influences your music most?
AYONI: Colors, plants and art. I love to have colorful posters, pictures, and mood lighting when I’m creating at home. It can really help me to feel like my space is beautiful art.
LUNA: How would you describe your music if you were to sum it up in a sentence?
AYONI: A soundtrack to growth.
