MAKING MUSIC FOR THE MASSES AND FOCUSING ON LIFE’S POSITIVES — is what Leeds native quintet About-Faces is all about.

Made up of members Sennen Ludman (vocals and guitar), Danielle Capstick (vocals and keys), Joseph Schofield (drums), Cormac Connolly (lead guitar), and Nigel Ngwenya (bass guitar), About-Faces is as fresh as an up-and-coming band can be. In 2023, they released three singles, “Under the Sun,” “The River” and their latest, “Cinematic and Chrome,” all of which were produced by Jamie Lockhart and Rob Slater from Greenmount Studios in the band’s hometown of Leeds.

Having known each other for years, it’s only after the pandemic that the band started jamming, leading to studio time that landed them live gigs in July of last year. Although they are a “newborn” band, About-Faces has already found the value in their performances, which inspired them to begin writing with the live audience in mind — an added “pressure” that wasn’t there before.

Although each member of the group takes inspiration from different artists, frontman Ludman shares that About-Faces wants to fuse two generations: the sound of old stadium bands such as U2 and INXS, and a modern production style characterized by bass synths and big kick drums.

Something they all have in common, though, is their love for relatable tunes and live performances, which, according to Ludman, helps them forget about the modernity of life. This helped them develop their style, which was a natural process for the British band.

“We never went in the studio with any intentions,” the vocalist says. “Sounds cliche to say, but we genuinely had no boundaries or expectations, so the music is 100% authentic.”

About-Faces’ debut single, “Under the Sun,” particularly means a lot to the group. As eternal music fans, they hope to experiment with other genres in the future, introducing little fusions to compliment their released songs.

“Cinematic and Chrome,” their latest release, which Ludman considers one of their strongest tracks so far, is authentic and real; lyrically ambiguous yet relatable at the same time, with a timeless riff that very nicely fits festival stages.

Producers Lockhart’s and Slater’s directions and input were so valuable to the band that they decided to go back to work on their following singles.

While juggling their day jobs and music careers, About-Faces dreams of a future in which they are signed to a label and are on a proper tour to support another band. And, of course, a future in which they continue to enjoy making music and sharing it with the world.

“It’s hard, and there are a lot of sacrifices that have to be made, but hopefully not for too much longer,” Ludman shares confidently.
