Rightfield - “Baby”

The beat of “Baby” by pop-rock duo, Rightfield, pulses with the visceral touch of memories. The ones that were still soaked in the summer, but lay quiet in your head. “Baby” is about capturing those fleeting moments - where escapism isn’t hard to find but it’s harder to see what landscapes they can take you to. Rightfield is only capable of creating songs that make you want to create memories too - either when you are driving down the highway without any clear sense of an exit sign or those days spent with friends that seem to go on forever. The duo wants the listener to feel every lyric and sound within a song. “Baby” comes off the back of the drop of their deluxe edition of their debut album, Rightfield, One. “[The song is] about being outside in the still of the night and feeling content with where you’re at and who you’re with. Enjoying the ordinary present and feeling gratitude for being alive in that moment,” stated the band on the inspiration behind this sunlit track. Life is made-up of these tiny moments. Being young means we have to be fine with taking those in before we can adjust to the greater tales life has in store for us. Maybe “Baby” can be the leading track to when those moments happen. 

Kios - “I Need You”

“I Need You,” is the latest single from band Kios. Based in Nashville, the three piece is made up of Cole Suddarth (vocals/guitar), Aaron Krak (drums), and Mitch Wollenberg (bass), who's sound mixes indie-pop with rock melodies and infectious harmonies. The song is bright and nostalgic - the perfect fit for late night summer adventures that seem ephemeral and so precious. It is a song for dancing in the rain, a song for no cares. “I Need You,” lingers like a love song that doesn’t care for the future or past, but rather focusing on being so present with the current. 

PinkPantheress - “Passion”

PinkPantheress is one of the most exciting artists to emerge from the TikTok algorithm. From songs like “Pain” and “Break it off”, the young singer/ songwriter and producer is eclectic and continuously creates mixes that feel both familiar and original. The 20 year old recently described this feeling as ‘new nostalgia’ which certainly feels like the most perfect way to articulate her sound to those who are yet to listen. Her soft and delicately pitched vocals behind the backdrop of a drum and bass beat feel effortless and reminisce that of Lily Allen, especially on new track “Passion”. Already a fan-favourite after being used thousands of times in the background of TikTok videos, the singer blends acoustic plucked guitar melodies with a buildup of atmospheric nu-jungle and pop. PinkPantheress sings about the complexities that come with losing your past passions, of feeling outcast and simply being misunderstood by those that appear to love you most. Lyrically and sonically, the young artist succeeds again in creating a unique track that is both heartfelt and escapist. 

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - “Weekend Run”

The best kind of songs are the ones that don’t fit the current ecosystem. Every note’s entire path from beginning to end is a tribute, made with a modern sensibility, to a time period that has constantly fallen on a musician's palette. Unknown Mortal Orchestra has done this with the single, “Weekend Run.” The song doesn’t say much yet each lyric, and the accompanying Christopher Cross inspired beat, are a build up to being able to shout how the weekend is the only days where life seems to reach utopic proportions. Weekdays are a drag, and it seems Unknown Mortal Orchestra takes them in stride because he knows waiting at the end of it all is his pot of gold: two days where life has no formula. If you are tired of the work week, let “Weekend Run” make you boogie until Friday has its sights on Saturday. You won’t regret it!

binki - “Revolve”

Infectious and overflowing with a sense of youthful urgency, the double single Revolve that features “Revlove” and “Clay Pigeon” showcase binki’s undeniable talent. A true paragon of music made in the Internet Age, US based binki’s sound melds together different sounds and spheres of influence, and this culminates into an impressive catalogue of indie pop, dance, indie rock, pop punk, hip hop, and more. With the latest double single, the synthetic energy of electronic-pop punk reminiscent of Le Trigre alongside a vocal performance akin to Hello Yello is the driving force of “Revolve”. “Clay Piegon” leans into indie rock sounds and contains one of the most punchy choruses of 2021. binki has an ability to make music that is so easy to love and so difficult to forget.
