Now Listening: This Week's Tracks
Sally Boy - “Chess and Checkers”
Sally Boy returns with his latest track “Chess & Checkers”, serving as some insight into his upcoming EP. The track compares a toxic relationship to a game of chess and checkers, explains it as, “clear the board, reassemble the pieces, play again and again. There’s something sinister in the repetition and ease with which we play these games — constantly telling yourself that this is the last time you’re willing to play, that this is the last game. Yet, we always seem to fall back into the same routine." The song, though, is full of a light energy and charming melody, making it a catchy tune to listen to and scream the words to or play in the car as Summer arrives. Dabbling with multiple genres and sounds, “Chess & Checkers,” will be an addicting song you’ll play in your head all day long.
KIM! - “Care 4 You”
“Care 4 You” is a tranquil sweet pop song from KIM! There are sweet notes flowing through but along with those notes are unique elements like water drops and clinking that tie the song together to be an interesting listen. Her vocals are smooth and velvety with hints of melodic beauty. “Care 4 You” is not only a relatable track but through her vocals you can connect to KIM! and feel that comfort that she tries to convey. KIM! is like the best friend you can come to whenever there is something you need to understand better or put into words.
Trip Carter - “Freshout”
Trip Carter releases new track, “Freshout,” a focus on his upcoming project Slim Tripper. “Freshout” is a smooth and sweet track that blends multiple genres like RnB, Pop and Alternative. The song is about finally getting out of a bad situation, something that the world has experienced collectively last year. Trip Carter explains, “"This song is about the feeling you get when you're finally out of a bad situation. When you're fresh out of jail, work, quarantine, or a toxic relationship, the energy is unmatched. You can finally breathe, blow off some steam and look forward to new possibilities." His upcoming new project is a shift in sound from his usual hip hop to incorporating more genres and elements in his music. “Freshout” is a catchy way to get a taste of the new sound and build on the excitement for Slim Tripper.
Noah Cho - “Empty Bed”
Noah Cho’s vocals glide over in his latest alternative rock song “Empty Bed.” Cho tells the story of a person who thinks no one cares about them, entangling feelings of self-doubt and nostalgic young wonder. Cho contradicts the first part of the story as the track progresses, describing how that person looks in someone else’s eyes. Shining lyrics emerge through the heavy guitar and drums to convey an overarching tone of confidence and letting go. The 20-year-old from Maryland should undoubtedly be on music’s radar, with fans looking out for more from the young independent musician in the future.
bülow - “Revolver”
With an exciting sound and raspy sweet vocals, bülow releases new single, “Revolver,” a song to feel empowered and confident. Bülow is someone to definitely keep an eye on. As she’s previously worked with artists like Ty Dolla $ign, Fall Out Boy and Mura Masa, Bülow is rising and creating an atmosphere of love and optimism through her music. “Revolver” is a song that you’ll fall in love with immediately. It’s got a hot and sultry vocal flow along with an upbeat enchanting instrumental that contrasts well with the vocals. At the cusp of punk and pop with alternative indie, you’ll fall in love with Bülow’s sound.
Smallpools - “life of the party”
The indie-pop crazed band Smallpools has graced us with another dollop of electronic sweetness with the release of “life of the party” and trust me, it’s the life of any playlist you might be tempted to create after tuning in. The trio is known for making infectious stadium pop-like anthems, and the new track follows in the same footsteps as hits like “Dreaming” or the collabs they’ve acquired with The Chainsmokers. Yet “life of the party” comes to us as the ultimate summer anthem that bursts with the group’s signature electro-pop infused melodies and signature contagious soundscapes that only Smallpools could pull off doing. With funky bass lines and textured rhythms, “life of the party” is indeed setting Smallpools on the fast track to ultimate stardom. Their highly-anticipated full-length is set for release in the fall of this year, so watch out.
