maxime - “u and everyone u know !”
Produced and released entirely by the artist himself, maxime.’s music is a mood booster in a bottle. His latest track “u and everyone u know” is an otherworldly cocktail of upbeat, energetic rhythms and powerful vocals. The single offers a second taste of maxime.’s upcoming EP, following the leading track “rubber checks”’s exceptional release just a month earlier. Featuring the self-proclaimed best selections from his oeuvre, the EP is a 5-track project that will release on July 21 of this year. The EP comes after the 2019 release of his impressive debut album whatevernowiscalled which comprises a genre-bending mix of eighteen tracks that have amassed over 15 million streams in just three years. Having recently relocated from Ottowa to Montreal, maxime. is now embarking on a new endeavour to pursue music full time.
Ludic - “brain food”
The latest track from Vancouver-based trio Ludic, “brain food” is a sonic canvas filled with splashes of charming vocals and a catchy melody. A candid tour through their personal experiences with the education system, the track presents the universal feeling of being simultaneously too intelligent and too dumb – an enigma that can’t conform. “brain food” takes its place as the sixth track on Ludic’s debut EP Grown?, an impressive 8-track exploration of the art of growing up. The trio effortlessly guides listeners through imposter syndrome, self-discovery and surviving education. Staying true to their collective name, Ludic is a playful blend of three talents experimenting with a multitude of genres such as soul, funk, jazz and pop. Fresh out of meeting at a neighbourhood jamming session, Ayla Tesler-Mabe and brothers Max and Rhett Cunningham are becoming more and more successful by the day as they share stages in major venues in Canada with big names like Catfish and the Bottlemen and Snarky Puppy.
small pockets - “askews me”
small pocket’s “askews me” is teenage romance from a Tumblr page in 2010. The yearning, processed vocals sound like The Postal Service or M83 in their prime. The song features production from Daniel Gleason and TJ Elias at Big Trouble in Atlanta, GA.
Mellotron loops sit next to a prominently feature a guitar tone that sounds almost indistinguishable from electronic glitch sounds. It’s catchy and emotional, giving off the energy of driving home on a weeknight date in high school, high on the idea of just being out.
“askews me” follows a series of monthly singles from small pockets, started in 2022. Let’s hope another is planned for May, as their youthful electronic sound is infectious.
Modern Diet - “Smaller (featuring Margaux)”
On “Smaller,” the newest single from Moden Diet, Jake Cheriff, the track’s singer, producer, and engineer, reflects on relationships past over a tight arrangement of handclap percussion and surf guitar. Listening on headphones enhances the soundscape as it takes full advantage of panning.
The song strips down to just that infections clap and bass when Brooklyn-based singer, Margaux’s vocals take over, bringing in a complementary texture, which seems to recall the thrilling vocal collaborations of vintage Dirty Projectors. It concludes with all of these elements coming together, Cheriff and Margauz’s voices harmonize, it’s magic, both haunting and beautiful.

McCall - “Hair Salon Gossip”
McCall always knows how to get you in your feels, with her latest “Hair Salon Gossip” plucking at all the heart strings. Bringing in elements inspired by Maggie Rogers and Japanese House, McCall layers her emotional vocals with powerful instrumentals for a smooth journey that allows the listener to hold on to each note. “Hair Salon Gossip” touches on lost friendships and all that comes with moving past a failed relationship. A topic all too familiar for many of us, McCall manages to provide a soundscape equally comforting as heartbreaking. The third single of her upcoming full length project out his summer, “Hair Salon Gossip” will be finding a spot on your heartbreak playlists and will get you through it - we promise!
Sophian - “In Love”
Australian-based Sophian make their debut with the sweetest track “In Love” which is sure to sweep you off your feet. After getting their feet wet with live shows, the band is ready to share their recorded music, starting off with “In Love”. The soft but enchanting track takes the listener on a charming journey thanks to vocalist Sophian Manik’s endearing voice. Manik shares, "This song is about feeling very loved and having someone in your life that brings the best out of you. Most people in their lifetime will meet someone whose presence along will lighten up your day. We wanted to put that positive feeling into a song and that's what you can hear when listening to the track!"
Make sure to add “In Love” to your playlist and keep an eye for all that’s to come from Sophian.
dayaway - “dayaway”
NYC-based band dayaway, are back with their second release, the sweet self-titled track “dayaway.” Meshed with mesmerizing vocals and a dream pop melody, dayaway are reminiscent of acts like Tennis and Hatchie, yet still manage to have their own uniquely dayaway sound. “dayaway” embodies a sugary nostalgia that isn’t often easy to replicate. With floating synths, hazy guitars, and dusty drums, the indie, chillwave song is full of catharsis as the group wistfully contemplate lost love and past moments that can never return. The next year promises great things for the band, with “dayaway” set to be featured in the forthcoming Netflix film Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between, out Summer 2022.
Estrada - “Outside My Window”
LA artist Estrada gained popularity on Tiktok with his epic, shoegaze cover of Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” (coined as ‘foogaze’). With a string of singles to his name already, the singer shows no sign of stopping with his latest release, the atmospheric “Outside My Window.” Familiar and comforting for listeners, Estrada’s elongated vocals are gentle and stretch out as he sings “anxiety runs through my soul now / am I ready to go out.” Hazy and laced in hopeful daydreaming, Estrada manages to transform any place into a coming-of-age setting, full of discovery and hope. “Outside My Window” is a sweet exploration into the early stages and emotions of adolescent love, from eager to anxious anticipations.
