Now Listening: This Week's Tracks
Carlie Hanson - “Fuck Your Labels”
Carlie Hanson makes a bold statement against a world desperate to shove people neat little boxes on her new single, “Fuck Your Labels.” Hanson sings about coming to love and own all the parts of herself in a world that is less than accepting in this loud, defiant, and percussive new song. This single offers a taste of the emotional release found on her upcoming album TOUGH BOY, out February 18th. Combining her past experience touring with acts like Yungblud, Jeremy Zucker, Bad Suns, and Troye Sivan with a fresh perspective, Hanson is ready to debut a new side of herself on her first album.
Arctic Lake - “Breathe”
With a smooth and moving feel to it, Arctic Lake’s new track “Breathe,” is a new classic. The tracks music video perfectly captures the emotions flowing in the song with the color choices, visual elements and movements. In “Breathe,” Arctic Lake articulates in a special way the feeling of someone drawing away and coming to terms with it. The song itself is a cinematic experience, every sonic element creating a significant emotion to listeners where if you close your eyes, you’ll experience a melodic movie.
Laundry Day - “Did You Sleep Last Night?”
New York City-based band LAUNDRY DAY released “Did You Sleep Last Night?,” the first song off of their major label debut album We Switched Bodies, releasing Feb. 11, 2022. The single sees the fresh-faced collective experimenting with a lively, abrasive sound reminiscent of early-2000s indie rock. This is thanks, in-part, to a production team including veteran rock producer Brendan O’Brien (who has worked with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and The Killers) and BROCKHAMPTON’s Kevin Abstract and Romil Hemnani.
The band has established themselves as an independent act to watch over the past few years with opening slots for The 1975 and Clairo, and notable co-signs from tastemakers like Zane Lowe and Jack Saunders. “Did You Sleep Last Night?” undoubtedly ushers in an exciting new chapter for the rising collective.
Dude Low - “Amnesia”
French indie pop artist Dude Low is back with “Amnesia,” a swanky new single and the first release off his upcoming album Ego Trip, due this spring. A smooth hip-hop beat and dreamy synth layers accompany his hazy voice and lyrics about escapism — the music video ends with Low flying on a plane, traveling far away from it all. The track is part of a larger exploration into his learnings after a year in solitary therapy. Low’s music speaks to the times as he reflects on the past, but also longs for something new — or as he puts it, otherworldly.
Mat Hunsley - “Do It Anyway”
On “Do It Anyway,” indie folk singer-songwriter Mat Hunsley doesn’t succumb to adversity. He sings of perseverance on his latest single, with instrumentals that are quiet and triumphant at once. An acoustic guitar opens the track, slowly followed by more guitars and drums that build the song’s intensity. A soaring string section is the final swell that amplifies the beauty and reward of taking risks. Returning to music after a five year hiatus, Hunsley's own path as an independent artist is an attestation to the very thing he sings about. His upcoming EP A Worrier’s Dream is due January 28.
