Sweetheart: Deandre Blair Washington

The diverse portraiture of Deandre Blair Washington is something to be admired by all; film photographs from all walks of life are captured here in strength and softness, warmth and cold, light and dark. What started as a hobby for Washington has now developed into a means to capture new people and connect with them. With an emphasis on simplicity, the Toronto-based creative is bound to make an impact through his work. Read below to learn more about his relationship with film, the Toronto scene and more.
LUNA: How did you get into film photography, to begin with? Why not digital?
WASHINGTON: I got into film photography because my uncle gave me his Canon AE-1 and I didn't know what to do with it because I was just starting photography at the time (I exposed many rolls when I first started). I don't shoot digital cause everyone was shooting digital and I wanted to be different from everyone.
LUNA: Why do you like shooting people/portraits?
WASHINGTON: Creating portraits gives me an opportunity to connect with people. I enjoy getting to know people and making memories with them. Also, I like to make people look cool.
LUNA: Do you have any goals for 2020?
WASHINGTON: I have three goals in mind. The first one is doing more studio-based photoshoots. The second goal I had in mind is shooting with more people in Toronto. My last goal is to try medium format film.
LUNA: What is the Toronto creative scene like?
WASHINGTON: It's amazing here! There's is so much raw talent here, whether it's music, photography, or visual arts. Also, everyone knows each other or has mutuals. I've met so many great artists and close friends here through the creative scene and there's always someone new coming up.
